The Chosen One By Carol Lynch Williams

The Chosen One By Carol Lynch Williams
Hey!I had never heard of The Chosen One until I browsed the audiobook section of my library, saw it was a newly released book with an interesting topic and picked it up!Dust Jacket Description:Thirteen-year-old Kyra has grown up in an isolated community without questioning the fact that her father has three wives and she has twenty brothers and sisters, with two more on the way. That is, without questioning them much if you don't count her secret visits to the Mobile Library on Wheels to read forbidden books, or her meetings with Joshua, the boy she hopes to choose for herself instead of having a man chosen for her. But when the Prophet decrees that she must marry her sixty-year-old uncle who already has six wives
Kyra must make a desperate choice in the face of violence and her own fears of losing her family forever.Characters: Kyra was a fragile girl who was willing to take risks in order to survive her world, and I couldn't help but admire her bravery in horrible times. Just because everyone in the novel lives in a polygamist colony doesn't mean that they were all antagonized. There are strong women and loving men within Kyra's world. Her little sisters were full of innocence and wonder, and the villians were absolutely frightening. But Kyra's other siblings, including her best friend, were barely mentioned. 4 and a half flowers. Writing: Lovely and detailed. You can tell Williams has written other novels. The book is weaved effortlessly. 5 flowers. Plot: You know from the beginning that Kyra has to leave the compound, even when she doesn't. It would've been better if Williams hadn't tip toed around that fact for so long. 3 and a half flowers. Originality: It's not a unique idea, and neither is this novel. But Williams has the advantage of obviously being a skilled author. 3 flowers. Ending: Predictable but promising. Wouldn't have done it any different myself. 4 flowers. Dust Jacket: Sums up the novel and isn't misleading. 4 flowers.Cover: Beautiful but doesn't peak my interest. 3 and a half flowers.Overall: 4 flowers.Emma Out!
